KathaSiyah is back with three more shows of Nagamandala this September. We are staging our Malayalam adaptation of Girish Karnad‘s Nagamandala on 8 September 2018, 7.30 pm & 9 September 4:30 & 7:00 pm at Shoonya Centre for Arts and Somatic Practices, Lalbagh Road, Bangalore. The play, is directed by Sunayana Premchander, a recent trainee under the Indian Ensemble Director’s Training. Nagamandala opened at Ranga Shankara on 23 May 2018 as part of the final showcase of the programme. The relevance of staging Nagamandala today lies entwined with the evolving discussion around women’s rights in India. Conversations about women’s rights have been focused around sexual violence against women. KathaSiyah, intends to widen the ambit of this discourse to also include female desire, and finding agency within oppression. Tickets on bookmyshow.com and at the venue.
About the Play
In the ruins of a temple, a cursed playwright fights to stay awake. In desperation, he grabs hold of Rani’s story, and Nagamandala—A play with a cobra, unfolds. Locked up at home by her indifferent husband Appannan, Rani fills her loneliness with stories, creating a fantastic world of dreams and half-truths. When Rani acts on an impulse, her reality turns upside down. How will reality reconcile with her half-truths and how will Rani negotiate her way forward? Find out in an evening of love, magic, intrigue and much more.

Her most recent play as a Director is Girish Karnad’s Nagamandala in Malayalam, that opened at Ranga Shankara as a final presentation of the program. Sunayana has also been a student of Bharatanatyam for several years, and has worked with children and people using theatre as a tool to bring people from different communities together.
KathaSiyah is a Bangalore-based theatre group formed by Karen D’Mello and Sunayana Premchander in 2015. KathaSiyah’s vision is to tell stories with perspectives and narratives that are not included in mainstream discourse and don’t always make it to centre stage. The group focuses on work rooted in contemporary Indian politics and social debates with a deliberate re-centering of gender issues. The work is grounded in research and engages rigorously with other performing arts. KathaSiyah works in multiple languages with audiences ranging across the socioeconomic spectrum. Previous works include Taramandal (Hindi and English) Gidagiduga (Kannada) and 3 (English). In early 2016, it was registered as a trust and received formal registration and recognition with the Income Tax department starting April 2017. Read More
